Work/Travail/Arbeid (2018)
Pirates on the couch
Director
Often I am considered as a Dutch filmmaker!
All the films I shot in the eighties were indeed made with grants of the Dutch Film Fund.
And all of them were, in their way and in their category, quite successful. They all had their first showing at the Venice Festival – reason maybe why in Italy I am known as filmmaker. More than in Belgium e.g. where the films were not showed as often when they came out.
They were all screened on television; not the Dutch nor the Belgian television, but WDR III at times when these kind of artistic films could be showed on the small screen.
My more recent filmwork is a special mix of silent film made for accompanying live works of classical composers. The initiative went out from the Opera Dagen Rotterdam, BiancoNero and Transparant (see music designer).
As a scriptwriter I collaborated with Emile Poppe on his film Mathilde, with the French filmmaker Christine Laurent on Les Reines de la Nuit. With the Swiss documentary filmmaker Jacqueline Veuve I worked on several projects and also on her feature fiction film, Parti sans laisser d’adresse. The most regularly I was co-writer for the films of Chantal Akerman.
I created also 'site-specific' silent film programmes (extra muros) for the Cinémathèque Royale de Belgique, on special locations. A series called: Imaginaire en Contexte. During my days at the Nederlands Filmmuseum I curated special programmes, also presented at the Rotterdam Film Festival.
Also in a cross-boarder category (see artist), I conceived filmic back-grounds or scenografies for special exhibitions in Maastricht (Marres, NAI) and Brussels (Europalia, Transsiberian Express).
Making use of mixed media, more precisely dance and film, was Echte Clichés, performed during Springdance in Utrecht and in De Singel in Antwerp.
Last year I realized one of my earliest dreams: I directed an opera! The short Alcyone by Maurice Ravel, at the auditorium du Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
